Design and Creation of a Native Plant Garden at the Coomes Recreation Center
Volunteers Needed Public Welcome Habitat Installation/Maintenance
Representatives from WOAH, Washington County Master Gardeners and Virginia Master Naturalists met to plan creating a Native Plant Garden at the Coomes Recreation Center in Abingdon, VA. The group developed a design, contacted Abingdon City Parks and Recreation, got funding and plants, and organized a work party. Twelve individuals from the 3 groups planted and lightly mulched over 150 plants.
Individuals monitoring, watered, and weeded the planting. In July, they observed good survival and 10 monarch caterpillars on the new milkweed plants! A few weeks later, another group also observed 10 caterpillars, most likely different from earlier set.
The plan is to expand the garden and continue to maintain it.
